Trek Online Game Developing

Star Trek Online, a massively multiplayer online game, is in active development. Game developer Cryptic Studios Inc recently announced that it had secured the rights to develop and publish the game from CBS Consumer Products after the now-defunct Perpetual Entertainment canceled it plans for a similar game.

Players will begin Star Trek Online as the captain of a small Starfleet or Klingon Empire ship. The can customize their characters from pre-existing Trek species and can create entirely new alien races. As they progress thru the game, players can increase in rank and gain larger vessels and more crew and engage in ship-to-ship battles.

The game will be set a few generations following the last Star Trek film and won't feature any familiar characters from the movies or TV series.

No release date has yet been set. -- 08/08/08

Pirates MMORPG Coming this fall.

Walt Disney Internet Group will launch Pirates of the Caribbean Online, a new massively multiplayer online game based on the hit film franchise, this fall, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The subscription-based game is in beta testing with the original planned summer release pushed back to fall for additonal development time.

Pirates is designed as a game but even more as a virtual world in which players build their own stylized characters, form pirate communities and embark on ship- and land-based treasure hunts.

Characters in the movie franchise will exist in the Pirates Online world, with the addition of a new villain, Jolly Roger. While great effort was put into re-creating the world of the movie and capturing the elements that made the films successful, the game's design stresses accessibility.

Participants will be able to play the game a third of the way through without subscribing, though they will see ads. For unlimited access, players pay a monthly fee of $9.95.

To date, nearly 100,000 people have registered on the game's Web site, requesting information about the game as well as a chance to participate in its current beta status.

Quake 4 ready to invade Oct 18

id Software™, Raven Software and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) have confirmed Earth’s invasion of Stroggos with the announcement that QUAKE 4™ PC has entered manufacturing and will begin shipping to retail stores nationwide on Tuesday, October 18. The long awaited sequel to QUAKE II®, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the Earth Defense Force’s legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race.

“On October 18, QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale with this new chapter in Earth’s war against the Strogg,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “Fusing an epic war-story driven single player campaign, and fast-paced QUAKE III Arena® inspired multiplayer, QUAKE 4 delivers a gaming experience fans will be raving about for years.”

Developed by Raven Software and executive produced by id Software, QUAKE 4 begins only moments after the events of QUAKE II, with the Earth’s fleet launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. As Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, gamers invade the alien stronghold, fighting alone, along side other Marines, and in mechanized walkers and hover tanks as they encounter the Strogg and their disturbing amalgamations of man and machine. Built on id Software’s revolutionary DOOM 3® technology, QUAKE 4 also features fast-paced multiplayer competition modeled after the speed style and feel of QUAKE III Arena.

Anarchy new expansion to be announced

Funcom will announce a new expansion for their popular (and my favorite!) mmorpg Anarchy Online on April 20. The last expansion, Alien Invasion, was released in September 2004. More than a million players have joined within the last years.

This will be the fourth expansion for the game that began a troubled run in June 2001 when servers were overloaded by a larger than anticipated initial player base. The first expansion, Notum Wars, helped some of the overload while Shadowlands in Sept 2003 introduced some great new features and severn more worlds along with instant dungeons.

The creators also released a new fee structure a few months ago creating a new free subscription level for Anarchy Online Basic. The Basic account doesn't allow access to the Shadowlands or Alien Invasion expansion, though new lower subscription fees are also expected.
